Word Cloud
From this word it out, I now know the main elements required for a crime drama.
The main conventions include, weapons, substances, gangs, turfs/turf wars and the glamorisation of sex, murders, shootings and relationships. I will use this information to help me collect images for my collage of iconography and to therefore convey my crime genre and focus my research into the crime genre into specific areas of the crime genre such as neo-noir and film-noir. |
Trailer Narrative- Snatch
The trailer for the film Snatch, begins showing action that happens at the start of the film. It shows the different story lines that occur throughout the film. The trailer is 2:04 in length, which is average for film trailers. Quite a large section of the trailer is devoted to the actual plot of the film, therefore it shows the audience what to expect, but does not reveal what happens in the resolution- as there would be no point in watching the film. There are a large amount of graphic matches used in the film which look effective due to the fast paced clips. It mergers some conversations in the film with other scenes which makes the trailer appear to be communicating with the audience. Some scenes are longer than others, but even the longer ones don't give too much away. The structure of the trailer has no real pattern, there are clips from all over the film in different parts of the trailer. This gives the audience clips of the film, this means that they know what the film is about and the main element for the film but not the outcome.
Narrative Anaylsis for Pulp Fiction
The narrative order of Pulp Fiction is in a different order to some other films. I will use Vladimir Propp's archetypes of character roles such as the 'hero' and 'princess'. I will also use Todorov's theory of narrative.
The crime/drama/thriller film has the first scene in a diner where a couple are plotting a robbery of the diner, this is still an equilibrium as the audience are only shown the couples faces, so they are on the couples side. The couple are shown to be villans due to their dialogue. This is the equilibrium.
There is then a development of two of the characters, the two hit men, it shows the audience what the characters are like and the plot for the rest of the film. The two hit men are shown to be the hero's as they are working for the right reasons.
The disruption of the equilibrium occurs when Mia Wallace has a drug overdose, the complication puts Vincent into a crisis. Mia is shown to be the princess as she needs saving (adrenaline shot) and the princesses father could be considered to be Mr Wallace that Vincent appears to be scared of. Vincent is the hero in this scene. The dealer in this scene, is shown to be the donor as he provides Vincent with the shot to help Mia.
The film then goes back into an equilibrium as it goes into another story line, Butch then hits the disruption of the equilibrium when he finds out he doesn't have his dad's watch. It is evident he is already on the run from gangsters who are looking for him. He is the hero in this scene as he is shown to be sensitive. The gangsters who are looking for him are the villans. After killing the first hit man, he is in an equilibrium for a little while until he meets another one in the street, where things get even worse when they run into a shop. The two men who work at the shop are the new villans and Butch and the second hit man are the victims. Butch manages to escape whereas the other hit man doesn't, he is then the hero as he goes back to try and save the hit man.
The film then goes back to the scene with the two hit men in the men's apartment, it shows the end of the scene after they shoot the first person. They then leave with one lad, who the first hit man accidentally shoots. The first hit man is still considered a hero as well as the second. They are then into disruption of the equilibrium again. They call for a 'helper' character who helps them to clean up their mess.
This is when all the story line’s roll into one back into the diner where the robbery is taking place. This is the climax of the film, when all of the characters meet in the diner for breakfast. The resolution of the film is when the second hit man gives the robber $1500. This makes him the hero.

Iconography of genre
Documentaries for an insight to the genre of crime dramaThe Rules of Film Noir
This relates to Crime Drama films as it helped to develop it as a genre, therefore I felt it was import to investigate into this older genre. I think we should try and include some of the aspects from film noir into our crime drama film as it is the genre which made all crime dramas. We will use some of the key conventions of film noir, such as shadows of light coming through blinds and classy characters with interesting back stories. From this documentary, it is evident that there are character types which are almost always involved; the male character who is obsessed with success/money. And the 'femme fetal' who distracts the male character and gives some 'glamour' to the film. Mulvey's theory of the 'male gaze' is apparent in film noir as the camera always seems to be focusing on the female as a male would be looking at them. (7:38 on documentary). Quentin Tarantino talks about Reservoir Dogs
Reservoir Dogs is a highly regarded crime drama film, this documentary shows the film and the films plot from the directors Quentin Tarantino's point of view. This is helpful to us as it gives us an insight into how crime drama films are mediated and planned. I feel that this documentary is worthwhile to us as it shows one of the most highly regarded crime drama films in the past 20 years. |
Teenage Crime Documentary
I felt that in order to develop a plot for a crime drama, it was important to do some research on crime itself. This short documentary about teenage crime... From this documentary, I have learnt how crimes are dealt with at the moment so I know what would be happening with the police in our film. Top 10 Neo-Noir Films
We have decided to include certain elements from the modernised film noir genre of neo-noir. We feel this is more appropriate for our film as it will be set in modern day- therefore it should have some modern elements to it. Neo-noir films are known as an updated form of film-noir which utilize themes and concepts from the film-noir genre. Examples of neo-noir films include; Johnny Cool, The Dark Knight, Femme Fatal, The Bourne Identity and Cash on Demand. |
Mini-Documentary/Quiz show on Genre
|
In our quiz show/documentary we included information about different aspects of our crime drama genre. Such as; the history of the genre; information about iconic directors from the genre; as well as, typical audience certificate ratings from the BBFC. We decided to present this information as part of a quiz show to convey the information in a more entertaining format. I feel that we still got enough information into the quiz show, as well as learning about the crime drama genre whilst researching for information for the video.

Audience expectations
|
After doing some audience research on what they expect from crime films it is evident that;
Audiences want a thrilling storyline, which to me implies that they need action and fights including interesting props such as guns, knives and new technologies. They expect crimes such as murder, fraud and assault with side crimes of alcohol and substance abuse. This may be difficult to film in our trailer as it will be shown pre-watershed. However, we can find ways to imply this in creative ways without actually showing it. Their expectations of promotional material from the audiences expectations include a link of all the products and a clear coherent pattern which tells the audiences what they would want to know before watching a film. |
BBFC- British Board of Film Classification
The BBFC apply different age ratings to films which are appropriate, taking into consideration the content that is shown in the production. For example, crime film Night crawler (2014) was rated 15 by the BBFC due to strong bloody crime scene detail, strong language. Whereas, Reservoir Dogs (1992) was rated an 18 due to contains strong bloody violence, torture, strong language & sex references.

Audience TheoryA Clockwork Orange was a very controversial film of the 70's (1971), in this time laws and regulations were not as strict as they are now-possibly meaning audiences were considered more of a passive audience due to more things (violence, riots etc.) being seen as more acceptable.
The effects/hypodermic model- I feel that the trailer for A Clockwork Orange could influence the audiences to be more outgoing and possibly aggressive. This is due to the amount of violence that is shown- and not necessarily in a negative way. Even though the characters get into trouble with the police, they are still seen as endearing and charming. This shows to audiences that violence can be OK. Some texts have been banned in the past due to research found by the Bobo doll experiment. This film caused a lot of controversy due to the copycat behaviour that what was happening in society, which reciprocated clips of the film perfectly. This was said by the UK authorities, as well as saying that this film encouraged a number of rape and other violent attacks after the film came out. This meant the film was banned from airing in the UK. This shows how some audiences (more so in the past) were easily 'injected by the hypodermic' needle from the media. Reception Theory- Audiences could have three different readings of this film including dominant, negotiated or oppositional. I feel that audiences for this film morally would have an oppositional reading- but still find the film entertaining due to the exciting storyline and characters. Post Modern Media- Post modernists would say this film has blurred/glamorised the reality of crime. They argue, that media texts are not true and are merely just opinions and things of one persons taste. |
Uses and gratification model- Audiences would watch A Clockwork Orange's to escape from reality, entertainment but most probably not to compare lifestyles! Due to the wacky characters and diverse storyline, I think audiences would watch this film to be shocked and to be able to reason with the protagonist and see life from their point of view. The needs for this film would be in the top section of Maslow's hierarchy of needs such as entertainment, morality(which would be questioned in this film) etc.
Surveillance- due to the crime in this film people wouldn't watch it for security, but they could to find out the types of crime that went on in this time era. Or audiences in the 70's would have been in their time era. Personal Identity- If people could relate to the characters in this film they would feel a connection with the film and would therefore enjoy it more. Personal Relationships- This film would help to bind people together as a "water cooler" conversation point of people at school/college/work due to its controversial storyline.. Escapism- Audiences would be thankful that their lives are not as violent or disruptive as these- unless their lives are like these, which is highly unlikely. I think the main use of this film would be for escapism from the real world for the audience. . |
Crime genre
Questionnaire |
Typical structure of a trailer |
I conducted a questionnaire to find out some information about the needs of an audience for a promotional package for a film. I put together 11 questions to find out as much as I could to ensure that we please our target audience with our media products. I asked five people these questions who I feel are our target audience. A mix of teenagers with one adult to ensure that we are not only appealing to teenagers. It is evident from my research of teenagers in this questionnaire that most crime related media products they are interested in include mainly TV shows, meaning that to make our film more appealing to them we should use some conventions of these TV shows such as using teenage characters and contemporary issues such as drug and alcohol abuse.
|
After researching the typical structure of a trailer, I have found that none of them reveal their most dramatic scenes of points of the film. However, the general idea of the issue is brought up and shown to the audience.
However, some of the more controversial film trailers do no use this layout of events. When used correctly, this can help to raise awareness of the film being released to a wider audience as more people will hear about it due to the controversy.
For example, The Dark Knight Rises trailer has used the three rule structure. Including the start with the introduction of character and the storyline, then the second- introduction to a problem and development of story and then a montage of clips from the film. |
Font analysis for Crime films
Iconic sounds from the genre
After researching some typical crime sound effects, I have come to the conclusion that crime films often use intense sounds to build tension and create an atmosphere for their audiences. They associate the sound of police sirens as bad in 'creating crime' films and as a positive reassurance in 'solving crime' films. The police can be represented in different ways depending upon who the film's protagonist is. For example, films such as Reservoir dogs, Silence of the Lambs and The Godfather the police are represented to be bad and unfair. Whereas in films such as Nightcrawler, Pulp Fiction it is evident that the police are justified (for the majority of the film) for what they are doing. Film producers use tense building sounds when trying to get the audiences total attention for parts of films. For example, if a case was just about to be solved or the detective had found a clue the audience need to feel like they are too discovering a crime. Sounds like these are often used when a protagonist is speaking quickly or solving a crime in their mind- the music tells the audience that something significant is happening.

Magazine cover Analysis
Film Poster Analysis
9 Frame AnalysisI have chosen to analyses Nightcrawler as it is a crime film which is the same genre as our film will be.. I feel this film uses a good range of technologies, interesting characters and a gripping plot- this is our intention for our film. Therefore I feel studying this film trailer will be beneficial for us in the production of our promotional package.

I find it interesting how this trailer avoids showing the narrative of the film, although it does follow a chronological order. Some clips are shown from the very start of the film then the middle of the films clips are mixed around- this keeps interest in the film for the audiences. If the trailer showed the start, middle and end there would be no interest for audiences to watch the film. Trailers do this by giving a slight introduction to the characters, disruption of the narrative and some clips of action and high impact scenes which will keep the audiences on edge and rise conversation (water cooler effect) which will make them want to go and watch the film. In the montage parts of the trailer- which is conventionally in the last third use fast paced clips which make the trailer seem quicker- keeping the audiences eyes on the trailer. This is an effective editing technique, this is something I plan to practice when making our own trailer.
More research on trailers
The Dark Knight (action, crime drama) 2008, is seen as a more unconventional trailer as interesting due to the focus on the antagonist more than the protagonist. The trailer has a number of fast pace action shots which show different parts of the film. The fade to blacks at the start give the beginning of the trailer a slower pace than the rest. The first third of the trailer allows the audiences to get to know the characters and gives them a sense of the story line. However, throughout the trailer the cuts become quicker which increase suspense of the film. I feel the clip where the Joker claps his hands where the shot cuts its interesting as it builds tension for the audience and cuts to the next shot effectively. The characters are shown in the trailer to be mysterious due to them being in the shadows and not revealing a lot of information. Overall, I feel that it is important to have the mentioned conventions in a trailer for it to be successful and to arise excitement of the film.

Research into possible production companies
The BFI (British Film Institute) is a production company which funds films with help from the national lottery. They say that their aim is to champion a breadth of bold and distinctive film making across the UK; to nurture new talent; and to back the development, production and distribution of films that will enrich UK film culture and define the UK and its storytellers in the 21st century.
"We welcome applications for film projects in all genres, and we are committed to promoting diversity in the filmmakers we support, the stories they tell and the audiences they reach"- The British Film Institute.
It is evident from their website that they often work with small budgeted films which require help with their funding. They have produced iconic crime films such as Trainspotting (1996) and Philippines, which won three trophies at this year’s British Independent Film Awards, taking Best British Independent Film, Best Director for Sean Ellis, and Best Achievement in Production.

Creative England don't just invest money; we provide a 'money plus' service. They are building strong, long-term relationships with industry and our partners. They provide practical support for film and TV production; organise networking and events; provide mentoring, information and business advice. We connect and combine local knowledge with national and international reach. We feel this production company could be beneficial to use for our film as it is based in England which would give our film institutional values of being British and will encourage other British people to want to watch our film. For example, after finding out that a film has been filmed in your county/town you are more likely to want to watch the film.

We might use this production company to help with the production of our film...
Research into distributing companies
20th Century Fox is one of the largest and most well-known distributor in the world. It works with a variety of films, TV programmes and DVD releases. Due to its popularity, an audience has an expectation of a product when they see this logo. They expect a large budget and possibly an all celebrity cast. Due to our film product being a low budget crime film, we do not feel that an institution like this one would be appropriate as it would not make enough profit out of the film for it to be worthwhile. If we had more opportunities of funding, it may be possible to get a large institution- however, 20th Century Fox would not be suitable for our film as we are not a blockbuster film will thousands/millions of pounds for a budget.
Artificial Eye distributions works with low budget creative and controversial films and releases them mainly into independent (such as curzon) cinemas. At these independent cinemas mainly independent films are shown, therefore by distributing our film here will attract an existing loyal audience to watch it, as crime films are not massively popular(from looking at the website). We could use this distributing company as it is based in the UK and has worked with many low budget films like ours before such as Fish Tank.

Arrow films is an all rights multi-platform distributor of feature films and TV series. They specialise in releasing some of the best content from around the world to UK customers and beyonds since 1991. They distribute a large range of products, making it one of the most energetic and cutting edge distributors.. After distributing crime films such as; The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Obsession and Foxy Brown. It is evident that this distribution company would be willing to work with our film as it experiments with different types of products to see how successful they are- they take risks, meaning they may be likely to invest in our film. Altitude Films Altitude Film Entertainment is a vertically integrated film company encompassing production, finance, international sales and UK distribution. The company was formed in May 2012 by Will Clarke, founder of British production and distribution banner Optimum Releasing, which he sold to Studiocanal in 2006. Partnering Clarke is Co-CEO Andy Mayson, a highly experienced executive who has held Board-level positions at such notable companies as Working Title, PolyGram, Icon, Exclusive and Hammer. Due to the nature of this company, I feel that it is likely for Altitude to distribute our film as they predominately work in the UK and on small time projects. Promotional packages for The Sweeney
I have chosen to look at the Sweeney's promotional package as the genre is similar to our film. The film is about a group of police officers in central London who work together to solve a crime. The film takes the side of the people trying to solve the crime instead of the people actually committing the crime.

The typography used throughout the teaser trailer is silver metallic which gives the illusion of a bank safe door closing or new technologies. This typography is used for the actors names, the title, release date, inter-titles, tagline, This repetition shows a house style which connects all three products- this gives a sense of recognition of the film- whenever the audiences see that typography they will instantly connect it to The Sweeney.
The typography used in the official trailer has used hinted of red with an underline, however the actual text is all still silver. The red brings a more modern feel to the inter-titles. This implies the film is up-to-date with technologies and gadgets, making it more appealing for the younger generation.
The characters in this teaser trailer are represented to be strong, knowledgeable and they give the impression they know exactly what they are doing. This shows police officers to be intimidating and powerful. The one woman in this film is shown as stereotypical as she gets involved in some of the action however, she is shown to be more in charge of the business side of things. This implies that women cannot be 'in the front line' of the police force, which is something that does not challenge given stereotypes in the media.
In the official trailer there is more of a representation of the one male protagonist, he is shown to be ruthless and passionate about law and order. This puts the audiences on his side, meaning they want to watch the film to find out what happens to him at the end. The love interest with the female character is shown more in the official trailer, broadening the audiences for the film slightly- this also gives a second storyline to the film. She is represented to be powerful but still a passive character compared to the two male protagonists this is evident where she asks the man "How do you want to play this" this gave me the impression she was asking for how she should act due to his power as the boss.
Two institutions are shown right at the start of the trailer (Vertigo Films and Entertainment One) this shows their importance to the production of the film. They are both shown at the same time over the top of the image. This is because the audiences should not consciously notice this, unless they are looking for them. They are only shown for a few seconds and are faded out straight to a car siren. An institution screen does not appeal then until the end. However, there is the Entertainment One logo at the bottom right and side for the duration of the trailer- indicating its importance to the film, The very last clip of the 'coming soon' shows some institutional details on a black background which are only small but do show what production companies are involved. The Sweeney did not need a large amount of institutional funding as its likelihood to make a lot of money and be popular. Due to appealing actors who bring their own fan base, interesting and unique storyline to a contemporary market and popular location for films. The institutions are shown slightly less in the official trailer as more focus is given to the narrative.
The narrative is not shown in the order it would happen in the film in the teaser trailer or the official trailer. This is because it is important to keep the audience guessing what will happen before they actually watch the film.
The creators of this trailer have used specific editing techniques to make the trailer look more appealing. For example, the use of fade to blacks will represent the passing of time, meaning that not everything is happening on the same day- therefore it is not in order.
The narrative is expanded on in the official trailer- giving the audience more interest and more of an insight as to what the film is actually about. The disruption of the equilibrium is shown in much more detail- therefore encouraging the audience to empathize with the main protagonist even more.
Audiences will be drawn to this film due to the use of synergy of the three products, due to them all being linked together with the use of the colour blue for example. This connotates crime and the police force- which is why it has been used throughout. This makes the audience associate the film with crime without even having to listen or watch any of the characters in the trailers. It is important to use colour effectively to convey a genre to an audience as well as to upkeep a house style throughout a promotional package. The blue colour is used as a general rule throughout all the products; from the video effects, costumes and even cars!
